Saturday, May 12th, 2012Things are shaping up nicely for the summer course of ds106 I am co-teaching with Martha Burtis, we have been super busy supervising and doing a lot of the work at Camp Magic Mcguffin. If you have every mused about trying to take ds106 as an open participant, this is perhaps the best time, during the summer, to come to camp, and let your creativity go wild. Go check out our welcome video and see the special info we provide for online open participants (yes Lisa Lane, we have a tag for you;-).
We were excited to hear that canmpers are already getting into the spirit, Lee has already done and created a first camper submitted assignment.
So I wandered down to the shored of Lake Macguffin to see how the cleanup was going.
It is still off limits while the crews finish the work, after emptying the lake, and removing all fo the debris with backhoes. Yes, there is a bit of reality distortion that happens in some spots, as you can see, but the water looks great, eh? Martha has been busy working on the new docks (she is handy with those power tools), and today, I took one of the new kayaks out for a spin:
As you can see, there are a lot of interesting nooks and crannies to explore, and the Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed we are adjacent to the location of some nesting bald eagles. We hope we get a chance to spot some of them soon. Just make sure you stay clear of that fenced off cove at the south end of the lake.
Well, that’s about all the news fro Camp, remember we start on May 21, but if you are an open online participant, heck, just drop in when you can, Just catch the creative fever.

Friday, May 11th, 2012I would not want to go to camp where the counselors told me my bunk house was like the Bates Motel. Who knows, maybe the campers are too young to know about the Bates place? That is about as far as Ol’ Jack got thinking about his new cabin, or tent, or whatever. Hatchet Jack has work to do!
Yesterday , thanks to @leelzebub there was great inspiration to “make place” and it was clear that the process of creating a home is a necessary part of the camping experience. All camps have place and it is essential we create ours. Today there was even more inspiration from @scottlo and it shows the rich physical diversity of the camp itself. What a wondrous camp thinks Hatchet Jack!
Having been absent from the great GIF I decided that I should practice before the campers arrive. And that it would only be fitting to practice on work about place and our Magic Macguffin cabins, or RVs, or whatever we find. So for @scottlo I give him blinking stars and a warm crackling fire. Stuck in the Sand

Upon waking up and checking the twitter this morning, I noticed that Leezlebub had already sparked the magic with her first ds106 assignment for Camp Magic MacGuffin. The name of this fun and intriguing visual assignment is Pitch a Tent in Camp Magic MacGuffin. I was so excited to see Leezlebub’s awesome work that I swore that I would do my own before retiring for the day.
So when I finally got back from work I logged in to Second Life and hopped in my new 1973 Winnabego RV and set my course for Camp Magic MacGuffin. I stopped on a quiet beach at Corona Cay to see if the place had changed since I last resided here a year or so ago. The trouble began when I tried to leave. It seems the wheels of my RV got stuck in the sand. The sucker wasn’t going anywhere.
It looks like this locale will have to serve as my base of operations for the duration of the camp. Fortunately there’s good wifi access and I should be able to stay in touch with the rest of the campers. Who knows, some might even want to pop in world and see if there are any possibilities for a ds106 approach to learning Second Life.
Apropos of yesterday’s post, I’m still flying by the seat of the pants. But it seems that things are converging in curious ways. Writing a blog post and doing a ds106 assignment while sitting next to a camp fire near a high-centered RV seems as right as rain. Let’s see what happens next.

I was really excited about Camp Magic MacGuffin, and I wanted to set up at my cabin right away! I threw together a quick little shelter inspired by a trip to Mexico I took several years ago. Then, with the help of Photoshop (a popular place to visit), I crafted a sign to warn paserbys that things might get crazy while I’m at work. I pulled out my laptop (on loan from katsushiro on Flickr), proudly erected the Camp flag, and called it a day. Wooh!

Summer Camp, DS106 Style

This summer, I’m honored to be co-teaching DS106 with my new colleague, Alan Levine. We’re going to be teaching the class entirely online over 10 weeks. In typical DS106-fashion, we’ve invited the Web to participate. The class will be made up of a group of enrolled students at UMW as well as a cohort of open-online participants. We’ve got a lot planned.
First, and foremost, our version of DS106 will be taking place at Camp Magic MacGuffin, a very special summer camp for digital storytelling, creativity, and self-actualization. (I don’t actually know what “self-actualization” means, but it sounds nice.)
In a day or so, we’ll be sending out a welcome letter to our UMW students. Others who interested in participating should check out our welcome video and our special video for open, online students. You can also review the syllabus and packing list. And, if you’re really dying to know more, you can get to know Alan and me better or take a look at the folks who’ll be joining us as camp counselors.
For the duration of camp, I’m going to be blogging my entire experience on a shiny, new site. I’ll be feeding those posts to my Twitter account as well as showing them in my sidebar.

Wondering and Plodding

The idea in coming to Cedar Island to watch a sunset while listening to a smooth and comforting stream via Luxuria Music was to find a wee bit of solitude and inspiration to write a blog post. I’d hoped to be able to explain why I’ve recently decided to return to and blog from Second Life. It would also have been nice to sketch out some sort of bigger picture as to where this Scottlo Radio Blog project might be headed. The funny thing is that after an extended stretch of pounding the keys I remain just as befuddled as before – if not more so.
I mean this is supposed to be a radio blog, isn’t it? But there really hasn’t been much blogging about radio. And the podcasting thing, what ever became of that? And wasn’t 2012 supposed to be the year of the Lo?
So the process of thinking and writing has revealed far more questions than answers. I really don’t have a clue as to what this is all about.
Oddly, perhaps, that uncertainty feels comforting. I intend to continue plodding along with a hunch that a clearer picture will soon emerge. But the only way that can happen is to continue plodding on. So at least something was figured out: the journey continues.
