Slacker!

Friday, June 8th, 2012

I promise, I was not slacking this week. It was just that…well, no excuses, I was slacking at DS106/Magic MacGuffin this week, entirely. The week, though, was very productive in non-DS106 ways.

This week I managed to get two of the assigned five Daily Creates finished. I am holding out hope but with a Brinner Party to get ready for Saturday night, I can make no promises other than I’ll have DS106 Radio to keep me company.

Daily Create #1 – Make a monochrome photo.

I took this picture of my daughter’s bathroom sculpture and I’ve been trying to find ways to use her inspiration to jumpstart my week of storytelling.

The toothbrush in front is the “introducer” who announces you
as you enter the comb/toothpaste/toothbrush tower.

Daily Create #2 – Tell a story about your most random job.

This was a ripper of a job and this is only part of the story. Oh the things I could tell you. Like the time when one of my crew tried out the invisible fence and almost passed out or the time when I slipped on an muddy incline during a rain storm and fell only to find out from my boss that was my fault. None the less, here’s the story.

So, those are my two of five creates. I’ll try to slip in one or two more this weekend. The brinner party might provide some storytelling materials.

All of Life is a question of balance…

A hawk, a bunny, and a bathroom

Monday, June 4th, 2012

I had a lot of fun with this week’s Daily Creates…

My first was TDC143, Look up today and make a photo that favors what’s going on in the sky. I chose to use a photo of the hawk that watched me as I packed my car to move out of my home in Charlottesville to my new house in Fredericksburg. The hawk has been terrorizing my parent’s home recently and has taken up residence in our backyard. It spent some time sitting on our sunroof, screeching at my parents through the glass, so they got a motion-activated owl that they put on the roof to scare it away. Shortly after we put it there, the hawk attacked it.

This is the vicious guy himself:

My second TDC was number 145. Not my best work. Womp womp.

Draw Bugs Bunny (Just Like Chuck Jones)

My third TDC of the week, I chose Take a photo that represents descruction, number 146.

This picture I like because it describes my current living situation pretty well. The bathroom has been gutted, but nothing says destruction like not having plumbing. I almost cried as they knocked it all down. Soon enough though, it’ll be all great again!

Camp Note Saturday 2 June

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Untitled

tihs is just a quick note of a couple of things I’ve been doing over the last day or two at camp. Apart from getting killed in the wide game. I’ve added a nice wee plugin to this blog. The google fonts plugin allows you to add a google font. The control panel lets you add some custom CSS to use the font if you do not want to apply it to say all titles or all headings. I’ve just added a class, campletter for the ‘Over the Rainbow’ font. I also added a drop shadow and a rotate to the CSS.

.campletter {font-family:'Over the Rainbow',san-serif;font-size:18px;background:#ee9;
transform: rotate(10deg);
-ms-transform: rotate(11deg); /* IE 9 */
-webkit-transform: rotate(10deg); /* Safari and Chrome */
-o-transform: rotate(10deg); /* Opera */
-moz-transform: rotate(10deg); /* Firefox */
-moz-box-shadow: 10px 10px 5px #888;
-webkit-box-shadow: 10px 10px 5px #888;
box-shadow: 10px 10px 5px #888;
Padding:6px;
Margin:6px;
}

It is pretty easy to get the CSS code for this sort of thing, just google it. The google fonts pluggin settings page has a section for custom CSS SO I didn’t even have to edit the theme.

The other thing I’ve been playing with is the iPhone friendly daily create page I made. Now shows the creations for the last 5 daily creates:TDC Today. I am finding this quite useful, this afternoon I was. Standing right beside this destroyed hut when I checked TDC. The code is now a real mess of php and JavaScript, it seems to work here. Let me know if you try it and it doesn’t do what it says on the tin.

2 out of 3 Ain’t Bad

Friday, June 1st, 2012
You’re welcome for putting this song in your head.

Challenge: Complete three Daily Create projects.
Challenge accepted. I opted in for:
  • TDC145 – Draw Bugs Bunny like Chuck Jones
I’d rather not have drawn anything given that my drawing prowess is really in diagrams and charts vs. cartoon characters but that’s not the point. Part of my purpose for choosing DS106/MagicMacGuffin was to do a little edgework with both my skills and knowledge of digital storytelling and media.
If I had to pick two out of three I’d choose the first and, ironically, the last as my favorites this week. Sure my Bugs looks a little chubby in the center and club footed but who am I to judge. I don’t dislike the Love DS106 radio TDC but watching @jslezak’s (blog)take on it, I’m left wanting for my own. Check Jerry’s contemporary, rational, and level-headed take on I Love DS106 10x
So, in the words of Meatloaf…you’re already singing it…I’ll leave it at that.

Hujambo Campers

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Look who I brought to camp with me? yes yes. They are a piece of love fallen from the skies above. Okay everyone, say HUJAMBO! That means hello in kswahili. Now we are all friends. Let’s get this camp party started.

TDC 5/30/12 Part 2

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Based on Kathleen Johnson’s image for today, I used Idée’s Multicolor Search Lab to create a composite image of CC-licensed images from Flickr that contain the colors of my morning sky. Then I layered that composite image on top of my original photo.

Neurosis Revealed

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Week 2 at Camp Magic MacGuffin and The Daily Create has us revealing what sounds drive us batty. For me, particularly, this is really more about revealing neurosis than a slight irritation.

For as long as I can remember, certain repetitious and rhythmic sounds drive me completely bonkers. My wife is convinced that this might be a symptom of deeper and darker problems (not really….I think). Here’s a quick list:

  • Clock ticking (any rhythmic ticking sound)- I actually cut the speaker wires for a more modern clock that artificially generated the clock ticking sound on a wedding present we received.
  • Wind Chimes - Forgive me if you like them. This tick is almost exclusively applied to little/high pitched jobbers (I’m okay with the lower toned chimes – those are actually cool). I’ve been known to ask neighbors to take them down.
  • Loud crunching while eating – This isn’t for the average everyday well-mannered eaters out there. This is for the barnyard escapees. This tick prevents me from enjoying crowded movie theaters. I’d much rather be in a matinee or renting the DVD.
I’ve been meaning to talk to a professional about these problems but I find the proactive approach of stopping the sound or avoiding the sound more effective. In fact, for this sound file, I had to search far and wide to find it. I also don’t find my irritation with these sounds that irrational.
Let me assure you I am a mostly normal, only partially neurotic, completely well-mannered guy. You won’t have to worry about me repairing your clocks or cutting apart your wind chimes (but I advise a better safe than sorry approach to your favorite things).
By the way…I also don’t eat in front of mirrors…that’s not part of The Daily Create though.

Annoying Noice–record a sound that sets your teeth on edge.
