Tutorial – Hangouts & Second Life

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

I think the procedure for sharing an application window in a Google + Hangout OnAir is sufficiently represented in this video. The bottom line is that it is a really easy process. I think this opens up a lot of possibilities for presenting, demonstrating and collaborating.

I look forward to seeing how others run with the idea. As for me, I’m going to keep on with the Daily Rounds. So I guess I should get ready for tomorrow’s shot.

Camp Magic Macguffin in Pictures

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Spent some time exploring camp and taking some pictures.  I’m using the oh-so-popular Pinterest to house photos.  I’m keeping all of my camp memories on a Camp Magic Macguffin board.

Things are getting weird here.  Bunk X makes me kind of nervous.  I’ll talk more about it in my letter home when I figure out what’s going on.

That was week 2 I think…

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012
I love the sense of timelessness that you get after a short while camping, hard to know which day it is.
Starting to make some contact with my bunkmates and other folk, some amazing folk here. Still trying to find my minecraft feet. Lots of kindly help.

So for week 1 we had to:

Watch and Review Mike Wesch Videos Michael Wesch at UMW Faculty Academy Part 1 and Part 2

The main point of this week’s reflection is to connect the concepts described by Wesch to your own experiences on the web, and project how this might play out as you develop your own online space for this class.

I am not going to reflect much on this here, but I though some workflow/playflow notes might be of interest.
I, like any other teacher interested in Web 2, am aware and have nodded along to Mike Wesch’s famous youtubes. I was keen to watch these ones, but 2 hours seems a long time to spend. I downloaded the videos, ripped the audio, converted to MP3s and stuck on my dropbox:

I then made them favourites on my iPhone so that I could listen to them away from wifi. Yesterday (Sunday now 2 days ago) I was driving an hour to go for a walk, so listen to one on the way there and one coming back. This is one of the reasons that I am a podcasting fan, as a consumer I can multitask. As a producer podcast has needs fewer media skills, so I like that too.

Listen to someone with a powerful presentation that includes video is not ideal, but this worked, I’ve seem some of the material before and imagined the rest. The problem was, it is hard to take notes or mark time when driving (Ideally, I’d like a voice controlled app that I could pause a podcast/audio and record my own audio notes).

One of Mike Wesch’s big points is how learners are disconnected from the classroom, a familiar refrain from lots of educators across the sectors. He clearly demonstrated how he had overcome this by involving the learners more fully in the teaching & learning process. Of course he tells it less baldly than that, his examples are beautiful. This is the way mainstreak Scottish education is developing through the curriculum for excellence. It feels right, there are now lots of great examples (plenty of recent Scots one on pedagoo.org) and on a tiny scale I’ve occasionally seen it work in my classroom.

I am still left wondering if this will work longer term. I do worry that the best example of this depend on really outstanding teacher connecting in unique ways with classes. The proof might be after a few dozen DS106 the question, how many daily creates and assignments do I have to do? no longer exists?

My week 2 daily creates:

and

That was five tdcs in one week. I find it easier to try and do as many as possible, last session once I slowed down I stopped.

Plugin notes: For Week three we are to try some plugins, I’ve already installed the Google Fonts Plugin. I couldn’t get Awesome Flickr Gallery to authenitcate with my flickr API key. I am now using slickr flickr which seems to do the trick.

Packing up, Moving on

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Last year at this time I was … two years ago, three?

Packing up and moving on has been my way for many years, lifetimes. The last three years have been particularly transitory, even for a self-labeled Gypsy Rogue Scholar.

Presently, I’m packing up to head over to Bunkhouse X at CAMP MAGIC MACGUFFIN. To prepare for the trip I found my pack and realized that I hadn’t unpacked from my recent adventure to Burlington, VT for the M. Ed. graduation of my dear friend mae.

Having a pack that’s still packed is a dirty-sock-stale-half-eaten-snack-ridden reminder that I’m in constant motion. Searching. Not yet finding.

Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for in Bunkhouse X. Most likely, I will enjoy a few campfires, friendly riots, panty raids, and sing-a-longs, and then I will move on. Searching.

Next year this time I will be … in two years, three?

THE ESSENTIALS (ABBREVIATED PACKING LIST)
  • boots
  • journal and a dozen Very Fine Point Sharpies
  • red pants
  • sunglasses
  • ENIAC
  • flask
  • sarape
  • passport
  • cash
  • tambourine

Optical Illusion

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

This is an old picture I had that was great for the optical illusion visual assignment. My friend and I were finding ways to make optical illusions one night because we were just bored and thought we’d make funny pictures. I decided that I wanted to cut her head off with some scissors & it really looks like I’m chopping off her head.

I actually used no real photo editing or anything for this photo. I just put the scissors in front of my camera and moved back like 15 feet from here and put the scissors in front of the camera near her head. Shockingly, it came out perfectly and she was clueless to the fact she was about to be headless.

Find the Error

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

I LOVE mysteries, so I had to do the “find the error” photo. I wanted to make it easy, just fun at the same time. I know everyone loves shoes, so I found 2 pair of my bright colored shoes and some sandals and did the photo. This probably was the more fun one to day for me because I love mysteries, I love shoes, and I love colorful things.

This process was really easy. I used no photo editing, just a little switch-a-roo. In the original picture(top), I just put the shoes together regularly and took the picture. In the “find the error” photo I just switched the left and the right shoe. It was very simple and fun. = )

Love In 3 Frames

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Love. Ha, isn’t it wonderful. This assignment was inspired by my love for my male friend that means the world to me. When I saw they had a visual assignment that allowed me to show my passionate side I had to do it. The 3 pictures above are just a few pictures of us being us. We always hold hands, we always take professional pictures, and we also know how to be goofy together.

I used a picture collage to complete this assignment and it was very easy. All I had to do was pick which background I wanted and then added in the pictures that I liked the most. I had to do a little cropping to make the pictures fit into the small squares but again very simple and fun

Reflection: Doing the Rounds

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

And just like that, the first installment of Scottlo’s Daily Rounds is in the can. Technically, it was really quite east to execute. I regret over modulating a couple of times on the microphone. I don’t think the distorted sound diminishes or masks the enthusiasm I was feeling. It was a blast.

I intend to put together some sort of tutorial showing how Googe + Hangouts On Air’s screen sharing feature can be used in this way. The video part is really easy. It just requires pressing a button. But if one wants to bring the audio from the application being shared into the Hangout, a bit of rerouting is required. I used Ladio Cast and SoundFlower (it was a minor tweek of the way I’ve done Skype calls on ds106 radio).

I should be able to hobble some such tutorial together in the next few days. I’m trying to decide whether use still images and a text write-up or to shoot it in video. Any thoughts?

One thing I need to find out about is the “legality” of shooting videos in other regions. I heard someone mention that this is a violation of the Terms of Service for SL unless permission is secured. I’ve also heard that it is okay unless the estate owner has prohibited it. If that is the case, I don’t know how to find out whether or not such a prohibition exists.

I do know that it is okay on Corona Cay so I will continue to do the rounds there until I get word from the legal team. Please let me know if you know anything about this issue.

Also, I’m not sure about embedding these videos to the Scottlo Radio Blog on a daily basis. They are on YouTube and my Hangout page for those who are interested. Any thoughts on this?

Until tomorrow….

My First Letter Home from the Camp

Stone, Water and Clouds
My Daily Create Number 164 – a picture of water, stone and clouds

Dear Mom,

I am really sorry I left without letting you know where I was. I knew you wouldn’t have let me come to Camp Magic Macguffin. You think I am too young to travel on my own, but, Mom, you need to understand that I am a big girl now and perfectly capable of taking care of myself.

I am also sorry that I didn’t write. Here I am now, Mom, and I am going to write to you regularly.

Everybody is very kind at the camp. I am staying at Slaughterhouse Four with 12 other people. I know what you are thinking – it is a bit crowded, but everybody is great. I have my own canopied bed. You know I always wanted one.

I also have my creature comforts and I am happy:

There are jasmine bushes all around my bunkhouse and they smell really sweet:

I am having a lot of fun at the camp, but I am also working very hard and doing my homework. So, please, stop worrying.

Love,

Your daughter
