Famous Monsters of Filmland Animated Magazine Cover

It’s a big file, but big is beautiful in this case. Feast your eyes on this animated magazine cover which is a more literal interpretation of the June 1975 issue of the classic Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine (more of a fanzine, really) featuring the scene from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) that is famous for the first of Ray Harryhausen’s legendary animated skeletons. You can see the original cover below, which interestingly has a few things wrong if you want to get literal. Namely, the color of Sinbad’s pants, the orientation of the fight, and the fact that the skeleton hadn’t lost its sheild just yet. This was a total blast to do, and I am working on a fullblown tutorial, but I must have spent four or five hours on it already, so I will simply leave it here to animate into eternity.

The Art of Shit Talking

There are far more definitions of shit talking than I ever dreamed of in my philosophy, but the one I am referring to is the act of “saying things to amuse people and playfully mock them.” For me the web has many faces, but one of its most appealing is that it provides a uniquely playful space to banter with people. Spaces like blog comments and twitter provide remarkable opportunities for talking shit. For example, this afternoon I had joked with Tom Woodward (who is awesome at taking such things to the next level) and in turn he created an animated GIF to let me know I was skating on thin ice with my earlier remarks. Here is that GIF:

I wasn’t sure what the hell it was, I just knew it was nutty. Turns out it is a scene from this music video of that crazy South African Zef band Die Antwoord. I had mistaken it for an Alabama house party :) Funny thing is, this started a bit of a back and forth on Twitter with me talking a little shit about how I could out exercise Tom, how I made ds106, etc., etc., run-of-the-mill stuff for me, getting under people’s skin is too easy on twitter, but it is also kinda fun. Sometimes there is a thin line, but within the right community a little friendly banter and back and forth can lead to great things. For example, after a fun back and forth with Tom he went on to create six more Die Antwoord GIfs that are all both disturbing and amazing. See for yourself.

I would venture if we weren’t going back and forth on Twitter they might not have gotten made. Would that be the end of the world? Maybe not, but he did make them, it was fun, we did connect, they are awesome, and as usual they are generated out of a sense of fun, play and shit talking. One thing is for sure, ds106 as a community is the better for it. Why? Well, two more of ds106′s finest artists, Giulia Forsythe and Michael Branson Smith, started to play along as a way of using the animated GIF to talk shit on me. Giulia oh so subtely suggests I might have had too much coffee with her bava attacks shark GIF:

And then pulls out another GIF to ask the question “what are you really made of?”

And then there was some allusions in the twitter banter about me being the ds106 overlord, kind of “the man with no eyes” prisoner guard in Cool Hand Luke, so Michael Branson Smith provided the visual—a little trigger happy Groom.

And what you start to realize pretty quickly is we are jamming, people are making stuff on the fly, having fun, talking smack through all kinds of media, and then the moment passes. And that’s that. It happens all the time in #ds106, these are the interstitial moments that are impossible to reproduce in your course systems—the hallway spaces that have little to do with the course and everything to do with the people in it. You shouldn’t look too hard for these events because they’re always there balled up in the potentiality that are the awesome people all around you—it just sometimes takes a little shit talking to activate them. As my good friend Todd Conaway knows all too well:

Make some art dammit, and talk some shit.

Master of the Flying Guillotine Animated Movie Poster

When I saw the Master of the Flying Guillotine movie poster, I knew I had to animate it for this ds106 design assignment. This is a very rough first draft, and I only got this far thanks to Tim Owens’ seemingly boundless patience with my idiotic Photoshop questions (it was a good refresher of the details I learned for the animated Hulk comic book cover I did). Like I said, it is a very rough first draft, but I have a sense of what I need to do to fix it up now. The difficulty with this one was getting the elliptical movement of the guillotine to be convincing and somewhat centered, on my next run through on this work-in-progress I’m gonna see if I can’t master that. Any and all future versions of this draft will added as an update to this post.

An Album Cover

It is the picture for your album cover. Manipulate the picture, resize it, add some other color, whatever. Do the same with the band name and album title, put them over top. However you wanna do it. Make it look cool.

Not usually one for the visual assignments, I saw Jeff McClucken’s effort to capture the essence of his new band, Swiss Emigration to Russia, and succinct breakdown of how to create the album cover and went through the brief process of creating a band and finding an image.

After being introduced to the Dactyloceras lucina – a species of moth of the Brahmaeidae family found in central and west Africa – I went a little further with the image search, consulting Flickr’s the Commons under the search tag for Interesting and found my base layer, which I then uploaded into pixlr.com, an online photo editor that let me add text and diffuse the picture to give it the grainy/painting effect.

Other than not creating a square image – as I believe is one of the requirements – I also think I could have done a better job capturing the essence of my randomly generated quotation, which I’ll share in full here as a fond greeting to my camp and bunkmates, but also an acknowledgment of Camp Macguffin’s initial honeymoon period (I mean, not in Bunk X, but for the other campers):

The only thing that lasts longer than a friend’s love is the stupidity that keeps us from knowing any better.

Homage to Bunkhouse X, the new wave of campers–freedom fighters, truth tellers, and lovers. Tell me Bunkhouse X, “Didn’t I bring your love down? All night?”

Bunkhouse X is located in CAMP MAGIC MACGUFFIN, our very own hostile, zombie ridden, summer camp run by Imperialist Squirrels. You should visit. Bring marshmallows. Zombies hate marshmallows.

Campire Stories

A little twist on the Family Legend assignment from the Daily Create let me bring this neighbourhood legend to the Camp Magic Macguffin campfire. 

They had come from Burnaby, had the MacDonalds that came to reside on Garcia Court, and beyond the neighbouring suburb were from points across the breadth of Canada and back into Europe. Both branches of the family we knew reached the old countries of England and Scotland eventually, but had each traced vastly different routes across Canada to the coast.

Mr. MacDonald’s family had splintered out of a line of Joneses in Ontario and settled in southeastern British Columbia near the American border where towering mountains are ringed by lingering smog of a half-century’s smeltering. Mr. MacDonald’s father had worked in that smelter, and he and three siblings were raised in a narrow two-story house near their elementary school. The family lived above the gouge of the Columbia River and knew well the hoards of river moths that owned the dusks and dawns of summer with a singular and biblical tenacity.

It has struck me each time I’ve heard it told that Mr. MacDonald never passes over the subject of his hometown in conversation without mentioning these moths. His eyes sharpen and he pointedly engages each person within eye and earshot in his narration; there is no mistaking the onus he places on the regular emergence of the hovering pests.

“You have to drive with your windshield wipers on,” I have seen him marvel. “And the town hides itself indoors, sure to seal every window and door – even though you could at best keep only ninety percent of them out!”

Listeners cringe at this image, and Mr. MacDonald relishes their discomfort. “Oh yeah!” He often repeats important details for effect, stalling and indulging brief cul de sacs and dead ends before continuing with the story. These productions never seemed scripted until I began to hear these various narratives told and retold by Mr. MacDonald, and then also by others on the street, word for word.

This particular story of the onslaught of minuscule beasts wobbling as they rise from the Columbia River Valley inevitably meanders to the recounting of the childhood of Mr. MacDonald’s youngest brother, David. (No one fails to mention, in this telling, that Brandon bore such a resemblance to his father’s brother that once Brandon had reached the age of fourteen, they were christened “DavidBrandon” for the duration of several family gatherings that spanned almost a decade.)

It is told that as a child David never harboured the town’s apprehension for the river moths, and would await their nightly coming tide at the crest of the bluffs above the river. Standing bare-chested toward the setting sun, he would watch the air thicken above the flat pools on the Columbia and hear the million hatchlings popping onto air. The hum would drive in a cloud toward him on the hill and his heart reportedly raced as the million moths reached and engulfed him before sweeping over the bluffs like a humming wave. They would fly through his hair and glue their wings to the sweat of his arms and legs, and he would let the ones that could land and begin to crawl, trekking his skin and covering him from head to toe. Only once the night’s flight had subsided would he walk the steep grade of the hillside and descend slowly into the freezing depths of the river. The moths that resisted at the surface of the water would come unstuck once submerged, and David would rise from the water clean, washed with the first boilings of the next night’s hatch.

I heard this story for the first time at a cul de sac barbeque at the end of my driveway. Mr. MacDonald had put his silver beer down to do the telling, and as many as fifteen of us looked on as he reached the dramatic finish, painting his brother as a shining martyr of these moths. Perceiving that I was perhaps the only one present who had yet to hear this tale, he nodded to me for what I assumed was my appraisal of the tale.

I said meekly, “Didn’t anyone ever go out there with him?”

Mr. MacDonald laughed and said, “DavidBrandon always wanted to know the same thing.”

Packing up, Moving on

Last year at this time I was … two years ago, three?

Packing up and moving on has been my way for many years, lifetimes. The last three years have been particularly transitory, even for a self-labeled Gypsy Rogue Scholar.

Presently, I’m packing up to head over to Bunkhouse X at CAMP MAGIC MACGUFFIN. To prepare for the trip I found my pack and realized that I hadn’t unpacked from my recent adventure to Burlington, VT for the M. Ed. graduation of my dear friend mae.

Having a pack that’s still packed is a dirty-sock-stale-half-eaten-snack-ridden reminder that I’m in constant motion. Searching. Not yet finding.

Maybe I’ll find what I’m looking for in Bunkhouse X. Most likely, I will enjoy a few campfires, friendly riots, panty raids, and sing-a-longs, and then I will move on. Searching.

Next year this time I will be … in two years, three?

ds106: The Spring 2012 Course Evaluations

Last Fall, in preparation for teaching ds106 this Spring, I blogged about a number of trends in my Spring 2011 course evaluations and how I wanted to work on my relatively poor scores when it comes to at least two elements of the course: “Clear Criteria for Grading” and “timely return of graded materials.” (We got course evaluations back much much quicker this year thanks to the course evaluation system moving online.) Turns out despite the best laid plans of mice and menaces, my numbers in both categories went down slightly. For example, “clear criteria for grading” was 3.95 out of 5 last year, and was 3.93 this year, which kinda pisses me off because I spent a lot more time framing expectations this time around. That said, grading in ds106 is very much part and parcel of one’s engagement in the work happening around the community, and despite how much I push this it always comes as a surprise to students at the end of the semester when it comes to grading.

The other area, “timely return of graded material” was an average of about 4.25 out of 5 last year across both sections, this year it was 4.13 for my larger, combined class. I am not as surprised about this because I pushed off our weekly meetings and didn’t send letter grades out after we met. I think part of my problem with both these categories is I am torn between totally abandoning the traditional notion of the letter grade but still making sure students have a clear sense of where they are throughout the semester—which is what I do three times a semester in individual conferences. This approach takes a ton of time, but I figure the more intimate, focused feedback on their progress and work is far more useful than a hard and fast grade. But I may be wrong on this count. I ride them regularly in their comments and through email from week 2 on so they don’t fail miserably out of the gate (which works very well, I highly recommend this—particularly for online students), the feedback is regular and sometimes brutal :)

As for the other categories for instructor evaluation, there were some my scores increased significantly others where it fell marginally. For example, this semester the class “met on schedule” was up .18 points from an average of about 4.62 to 4.8. Not sure what to say here, we met pretty regularly last year as well. Also, the “presented material in an organized fashion” was up about one-tenth of a point from an average of about 4.23 to 4.33—I think this has a lot to do with all of Alan Levine’s amazing framing of the assignments each week—I benefitted similarly from teaching alongside Martha the previous year as well.

I’m a little sad to report that my enthusiasm score went from an average of about 4.93 to 4.89—I wonder if this a case of a bit of ds106 ennui. This is most distressing for me, enthusiasm is all I got—it’s my life! :)

The second part of the evaluation is the focus on the course experience. And I was pretty impressed with the results this time around because all six categories increased, and the separation of course experience from the instructor is promising for ds106. My larger take away from these scores—which I fully understand are subjective, unreliable, and potentially earth threatening— is the idea of the course and its usefulness transcending any one idea of an instructor, which is nice.

“I found instructor’s feedback useful”. 4.63 –> 4.85 (this is odd given how much I got tagged on feedback in my evaluation)
“I was encouraged to ask questions about the course material.” 4.79 –> 4.81

“I was encouraged to reflect critically on course content.” 4.69 –> 4.88
“I found the instructor to be available outside of class for help (e.g., during office hours, special appointments, via e-mail, telephone).” 4.78 –> 4.84

Across the board the experience of the course ranked higher than last year, and it also had a 4.82 overall score which is significantly higher than the UMW average of 4.38.


The only thing I did radically differently this semester was to provide every student with the option to take the class face-to-face (f2f) or entirely online. Of the 34 who finished the class, 19 took it f2f and the remaining 15 took fully online (sometimes a few of these online students came to class for the fun of it). So close to a 60/40 cut when given the option to take it f2f or online. What was unfortunate about this go around, unlike last semester, is that I can’t distinguish the feedback from f2f and online students given they’re all in one section—last semester there was a f2f and a separate online section. That’s another point to consider. I had about 10 to 12 more registered students in a single session of ds106 than I usually do (last year I was lucky enough to get paid for two sections, but that was “corrected”) so I decided to overload to see how that would go, and in retrospect it wasn’t that much more work because I did a good job of keeping the onus on them to be part of the community, comment, interact, and basically forge their own relationships within and beyond the class. Placing the responsibility back on the students and following up with them on it periodically is rather effective for managing a very mild overload of students in my experience (don’t imagine it can or should scale much beyond a handful of students).

More and more I think the distinction between taking d106 online and f2f is arbitrary in terms of the value of the experience, and for me that is a radical development. ds106 is a web native class, it is born of and on the web making the f2f experience potentially interesting and reassuring, but at the same time vestigial. I like the f2f classroom, I like getting to know students their and having the physical space to congregate in. That said, based on my own experience I’m pretty certain it would be erroneous to privilege it in this regard.

Attempting to evaluate my teacher in this manner is flawed and unacceptable. To pretend that my teacher, Jim Groom, deserves to be evaluated according to a quantified list of predetermined measures would be an assault to his viability as an instructor, an advisor, and a mentor. Although you wrap up this ‘course evaluation’ with a pretty bow (telling me my input is important, that these evaluations matter, etc.), I absolutely refuse to reduce myself to participation in your quantitative course evaluations and ‘outcome assessments.’ Do you really believe I can summarize my teacher’s abilities with a series of “5s,” symbolizing his extraordinary capacity to inspire students to learn? I sincerely hope you do not.

And this one ain’t so bad either:

This has been the most work intensive and the most rewarding course I’ve taken at UMW. It is unlike anything else I’ve taken before, and I’ve gained so much valuable knowledge about Web2.0 and online presence, not to mention the increased confidence in my creative and technical abilities. I will use the skills I’ve learned in this class for many years to come, no matter what profession I end up working in.

The idea of the intensity of the work is a recurring theme in the evaluations (which makes me happy, get your monies worth folks):

Overall I really enjoyed this class. At times I thought the work load was a little bit much for a 100 level class, but Jim was very understanding of our busy schedules.

Where is written that all 100 level classes are less work and by default easier? This is a fallacy of some kind, right?

The work was tedious most weeks, but the hard work was well worth it. I learned so many useful skills in this class. Allowing us an extra week for video was truly helpful–I recommend doing that again.

This is a great class that overloads right near the end, starting with the video weeks. Seriously, those burnt me out hardcore. The radio thing was already a TON of work, then 30 stars of video, THEN 15 remix stars ALL WHILE I’m supposed to be doing final projects, in addition to my OTHER CLASSES and work and a social life? C’mon.

This course has been very enlightening in terms of things that can be accomplished through the web as a medium. However, the class is so fast-paced, if you don’t have the time for it in your schedule, it is advised to NOT take it. It requires so much time and energy through some parts of the semester and can be difficult to juggle the coursework amidst work for other, more crucial classes! I love the idea of the course though and it has definitely been an interesting experience!
