My Opinion on “This American Life”

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

I like how Starlee Kine started off interacting with Glass and not just talking about her own views. Glass asked her a question and  she instantly asked him a question, instead of talking solely about the show without his input. In Part 4 of Glass’ serious, he talked about how you have to interact with the person to make it interesting and not boring with only one opinion. And one of the mistakes that people make is not interacting.

Secondly, Glass’ stated in his series that you have to get “tough” and make it good. Starlee wasn’t saying nice things about the reruns, but that is what made it fun. If she talked about the good and only the good, it would have been very boring.  Then there is Trent, he come off as very goofy to me during the interview. But he did one thing that Glass’ said that you should do, and that is talk in a normal voice. Trent did just that, you could tell he wasn’t trying to “show off” by sounding like someone else.

The marriage part was very interesting to me. Mainly, Robert and Tamar’s story. I was so interested in their stories because Glass stopped  in the middle of Tamar’s story so that we could hear Robert’s story and see how they were different. At that moment, I was like “woah” and when they tell their stories that are TWO different stories. The way that was set up was great.  Glass used comparison rather than letting them tell the story together, and made it so much more interesting.  Then when he revealed that to the couple that they told the story differently, it was funny how they basically blamed each other. Glass did a good job at making a regular story GREAT.

The part that talked about the comparisons with Rosa Parks, in my opinion was horrible. Sarah Vowell did what Glass’ said NOT to do. It seemed as if she had a sequence of words underlined, and she as very mono-toned.  She didn’t do a good job with getting rid of the boring things to make it interesting. It sounded like she as bored reading, and she really bored me.  The only thing she did do well was add in actual speeches or conversations. That was they only thing that gained my attention.

Each act had several of the point that Glass’ made in the series of videos. Some where good and some where horrible. But with all of that it showed me what to do and how to do it. First off, Don’t be too boring and make things interesting. Secondly, Never give up, you get better by doing more work. Thirdly, it’s hard to find a good story, but when you do make it suspenseful. Lastly, “ Failure is a part of success.”

BUMP the Bumper louder

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

This assignment had to be one of the best assignments ever. I listen to the radio a lot and sometimes I like the bumpers more than anything else. Most bumpers are very catchy, and they don’t have many words in them, which makes it easier to remember. Although, this was one of the best ones, it took me a while to be confident enough to record it.

I feel that mine is very cheesy, but I had fun doing it. I first tried to write down something to say, but it didn’t seem right. As soon as I started recording the bumper, it all came together. All I did was play some background music and let words flow. I knew the background music had to be something “uppy” and would make people dance. So I chose to use Rihanna’s “We Found Love” (Yes, I am a Rihanna fan).

Hope you like it and I hope you find it catchy = )

Audio Assignment: Bad Company & the Chipmunks

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Mainstream Chipmunk’d: The object of this assignment is to take a mainstream artist and chipmunk them.

Bad Company meets the Chipmunks for a helium-fueled retake on a classic track.

I raised the pitch, and hopefully, THE BAR.

The Foo Fighters, Chipmonkd’

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

If Dave Grohl ever hears this he is going to find me and kick my ass…

I’m a big fan of the Foo.  On a scale of “1″ being very chipmonkable (Think Beyonce’s “Put a Ring on It”) to “10 being very un-chipmonkable (pretty much anything by Black Sabbath),  I figure they are in the 8-9 range.  Of course, I had to do it.

I used VirtualDJ Home on my Mac to play with the beats per minute and pitch until it was just a little faster, and way higher pitched.  Easy, fun… now thinking about recording some fellow teachers and ‘monking them.

Chip’anna

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

I chose to do a Rihanna Chipmunk version. Yes, I LOVE Rihanna to bits, and I know all of her songs One of her songs I love the most is “Only Girl (In the World).” This song is very upbeat and a lot of people know it very well. Along with that, I knew that the chipmunk version would sound great to this song.

It was very easy and fun to do. I just opened the song on Windows Media player, clicked EDIT, and changed the pitch. I made the pitch very high, and it turned into “chipmunk” mode. I didn’t know how to upload that to my blog, so that is why I chose to upload it on SoundCloud. I hope you enjoy it!

This right here is the original song…

This is the Chipmunk version that I did ….

DS106 Design Assignment: I Can Read Movies

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

I chose one of my favorite movies for the I Can Read Movies design assignment, Groundhog Day from 1993.  It is one of those movies that I can flip to on TV and start watching it from any point and still enjoy it.  Usually, I notice some little thing that I had never seen before.  The amount of thought that went into its production is just amazing – how did they think of so many little things?

I think I thought of it for this assignment because it had so many repeating elements in its theme, it fit naturally into the I Can Read Movies book cover style.  I chose the groundhog element because it is one constant from each day, but it wasn’t the easiest thing to produce with my limited artistic abilities.  I looked for a CC licensed line art groundhog to use, but could only find ones that I would either have to pay for or were not licensed to be used other than in their original state.  Then I started searching for pictures and found the one below by John Kratz which allowed me to use and remix it however I wished.  Perfect!

ground hog

I dropped the image into SketchBookX on my iPad so I could finger-sketch the outline over  the image as a new layer, resulting in the repeated groundhog graphic.  The alarm clock was just a “Stencil” font surrounded by a rounded edged rectangle.

I chose the same “Share Alike” Creative Commons license as the groundhog image, seemed like the right thing to do.

Here is the final product:

Letter Home; week 4

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

Hey Mommie,

Another week of camp gone by. Just writing to give you another update on how things are. This week was a very easy week for the most part. We had to do a safari of our every day lives. Where we took pictures of random things that we saw and them used to them to review design concepts. It was totally amazing to me some of the hidden design concepts that I didn’t even know existed.

We also learned about the Creative Commons. The CC is basically a copyright group that allows you to share projects and ideas legally without getting permission from the actual producer of the work. Maybe in a couple of years, I’ll be copyrighting some of my work through the CC for other people to use.

Well, I have some other work I need to get to. I hope all is well at home.

Love,

Kavon L. Johnson

Color

Color Creates Mood. Draws Attention To Key Elements

I decided to use a stop sign. First off, the color of the stop sign is bright red. I assume that the reason why a stop sign is read is to capture the drivers attention. As the quote above said, “draws attention to key elements.” The stop sign is indeed a key element when it comes to driving. Missing a stop sign can lead to fatal outcomes, so I believe that a stop sign is a good display of color.

Typography

The Visual Component Of A Word

I know this is very feminine, but the Always writing was something that I always found intriguing. First of all it uses some type of cursive, but it’s not regular old cursive. This type of cursive doesn’t connect all of the letters, it only connects to at a time.  For example the AL is connected, the WA is connected, but the Y and the S stand alone. Although, it’s a weird type of cursive, the way it looks is perfect. Something about the writing style captures your attention and it makes you wonder why it is the way it is.

Metaphors/Symbols

Using Symbols to Represent Objects, Things, and Ideas

This is one of my favorite shirts. I got it about 2 month after Michael Jackson died. This shirt’s creativity is simple but amazing at the same time. First of all, the shirt only says “Michael Jackson” but the A in Michael, and the S in Jackson are very different. The creators of this shirt uses images of Michael Jackson to display letters. In my opinion, those images make the shirt so much more attractive. When I wear this shirt, people STILL to this day, compliment me on how cute my shirt is.

Minimalism / Use of Space

Doing Less With More

This is my flat screen t.v with a dvd player attached. Now no more than 20 years ago, Tv’s had big backs and most times you had to buy a dvd player separate from your tv. But now, in 2012, they have flat screen tv’s with dvd’s connected. I think this is one of the best inventions ever. Not only does the tv take up less space, but it is easy to carry and I don’t have to buy a separate dvd player.

Triangle Dog

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

I chose to complete the Triangle Animal Assignment. Of course, I decided to make a dog out of triangles. My favorite animal is really a turtle, dogs are second best, although I wasn’t really sure how to go about making a turtle out of triangles! With the help of the camp packing list, I chose to use the web-based vector editor called Raven (by Aviary). I have found Aviary to be a really cool site and I plan to use it for many assignments in the future. In addition to the image editor I have used for my visual assignments, along with the vector editor I just mentioned, Aviary also offers a swatch editor, an effects editor, and an audio editor, just to name a few. I can’t wait to continue exploring what the site has to offer.

While doing this project on Raven, I mostly used the “Create Spiro Path” selection, then chose the polygon and edited the vertex count to 3 in order to make triangles. I resized them, arranged them the way I wanted, added a little bit of color, and this is what I came up with:
