Color

Color Creates Mood. Draws Attention To Key Elements

I decided to use a stop sign. First off, the color of the stop sign is bright red. I assume that the reason why a stop sign is read is to capture the drivers attention. As the quote above said, “draws attention to key elements.” The stop sign is indeed a key element when it comes to driving. Missing a stop sign can lead to fatal outcomes, so I believe that a stop sign is a good display of color.

Typography

The Visual Component Of A Word

I know this is very feminine, but the Always writing was something that I always found intriguing. First of all it uses some type of cursive, but it’s not regular old cursive. This type of cursive doesn’t connect all of the letters, it only connects to at a time.  For example the AL is connected, the WA is connected, but the Y and the S stand alone. Although, it’s a weird type of cursive, the way it looks is perfect. Something about the writing style captures your attention and it makes you wonder why it is the way it is.

Metaphors/Symbols

Using Symbols to Represent Objects, Things, and Ideas

This is one of my favorite shirts. I got it about 2 month after Michael Jackson died. This shirt’s creativity is simple but amazing at the same time. First of all, the shirt only says “Michael Jackson” but the A in Michael, and the S in Jackson are very different. The creators of this shirt uses images of Michael Jackson to display letters. In my opinion, those images make the shirt so much more attractive. When I wear this shirt, people STILL to this day, compliment me on how cute my shirt is.

Minimalism / Use of Space

Doing Less With More

This is my flat screen t.v with a dvd player attached. Now no more than 20 years ago, Tv’s had big backs and most times you had to buy a dvd player separate from your tv. But now, in 2012, they have flat screen tv’s with dvd’s connected. I think this is one of the best inventions ever. Not only does the tv take up less space, but it is easy to carry and I don’t have to buy a separate dvd player.

Apocalypse Anyone?

Design Assignments 473—Otherworldly Distortion (1 star). Take a picture of a geographical location on earth and try to alter or distort it to make it seem like its from a foreign dimension.

Apocalypse Anyone?

This was a fun and easy assignment. I started with another photo I took yesterday in the mountains of Virginia. With Picasa, I played with different filter effects until I found one with a “foreign dimension” impact. The winner was the “heat map” filter. Cool colors. I think it creates an interesting, colorful image of a post-apocalyptic world!

Breaking Down the Creative Commons

Friday, June 15th, 2012

What Is the Creative Commons

  • a non profit organization that works to increase the amount of creativity
  • allows the body of the work to be available to the public for free and legal sharing, use, and remixed

Useful Resources

  • Sharing photos
  1. The ability to get photos off of the web and share them with people without being punished
  2. Remixing photos to make them “my own” without breaking any copyright laws
  3. Already having permission to share the work without having to contact the company

Flock Together & Share

Friday, June 15th, 2012

“Sharing is Caring,” words my mother instilled in me a long time ago. I found this picture on the Creative Commons website and it looked as if all the origami birds are looking over and reviewing something. That is where I got the idea of  ”Flocking Together.. Sharing Ideas.” I also like how each bird is a different color and for my it symbolized different cultures. Or maybe I just read in to it a little too much.

I feel that this picture really shows what the Creative Commons is about. I know it’s a tad bit corny, but a bunch of birds together is a flock, and the creative commons allows you to share work with many people. Sometimes when sharing things you have to be sure that you aren’t doing anything illegal and I believe the Creative Commons allows you to share works without the fear of being punished.

Catch Me in the Beach

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

I absolutely love where I am from. Colonial Beach, Va. It is a very small beach, but it gets a lot of attention during the holidays and the summer. When I saw this assignment I got a tad bit excited. Mainly because not many people know where Colonial Beach, Virginia is.

This again was an easy assignment to do. I just uploaded the pictures to “PicsArt” and clicked “Add Text.”  Again, I just typed what I wanted in the box and dragged and dropped it where I wanted it. I made the colors orange and yellow because they seem “beachy” and also do make it work a little with the background.

Come join the Youth and Beauty Brigade

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

The Decemberists are unparalleled storytellers and the best band that ever lived, so selecting one of their songs to use for a DS106 class project seemed appropriate.  For this assignment I decided to use a lyric from “California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade,” which appears on Castaways and Cutouts.

Here they are performing the song:

Castaways and Cutouts was released in 2002.  It went undiscovered by me until the winter of 2004.  I had just started making friends with some folks in Richmond.  One of them was a young hipster who had better taste in music than I did.

“California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade” remains on my list of favorite Decemberists songs for a few reasons.  The first half of the song is about driving route 1, which runs along the California coastline, and drinking wine.  Who doesn’t like a road trips and wine?  And look at these lyrics:  “Take a long drive with me on California One” and “Take a long dram with me on California wine.”  Clever, Colin Meloy.  Effing Clever.

It’s “Youth and Beauty Brigade” that I really adore.  I’m neither youthful nor beautiful, but boy oh boy do I relate to the misanthropes and misfits that populate The Decemberists’ Youth and Beauty Brigade: bed-wetters*, ambulance chasers, bored bench warmers, castaways, cutouts, irresponsible library users.  Yes!  And that brings me to this:

Jaysus.  I’m looking at the image now, and thinking that I really built that up with the back story.

I also worked in Photoshop too.  Photoshop is still a challenge for me.  Layers and working within said layers is counterintuitive.  I’m thinking it may have something to do with the fact that I’ve spent decades in word processing software built for the “everyman.”  I’ll figure it out though.  Here’s the Photoshop version:

Cops in cars

Photoshopped version

There’s not enough space at the top, and the font type isn’t all that adventurous or exciting (especially after seeing the stuff at Music Philosophy) or uniform, but screw it.  It’s a draft.

The police car photo is from Robert Kuykendall’s Flickr stream.  I found the image by doing an advanced search in Flickr for Creative Commons-licensed images.

* I am not a bed-wetter, by the way.  I don’t chase ambulances either.  I’m not much for warming benches, because I don’t play sports.  I am notorious for not getting my library books back on time.

Music is Life

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

My life revolves around music. Music is one of my main types of communication. Words that I couldn’t say, I would find a song that stated how I felt and played it for the person, or ask the person to listen to it. I was always on the top of my music but listening to all types of music and trying my hardest to relate to it. When I seen I could design my own autobiography cover, I knew exactly what I wanted.

I started this collage by finding a picture of something dealing with music and had a heart in it. When I came across this picture on “PicsArt” I downloaded it to the “PicsArt” program. I then clicked “Add Text” and added the words “musics speaks to my heart” and dragged it onto the picture. I chose to add the text so people could know exactly what music does for me and why I love it so much.

Together We Can

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

This picture of four people holding hands is a great design for DS106. Everyone pretty much knows that this is an online class so we don’t physically see each other everyday. But with that, it is amazing to me how we can all come together as one and get things done. For example, the collage for the bunks. It was a hard task to get everyone to submit their pictures. I had to find everyone in my bunk on Twitter and send out a group message several times. In the end, we all came together, like the people in the picture, and made on big happy bunk family. That is the main reason why I think this is a great design to symbolize the unity of DS106.

Hungry?

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

I took this picture  in church a couple of week ago, when my cousin, Mariah, was eating a pop tart and not sharing. Every time someone someone asked her for a piece she would give them this look. When I seen the option of making a captioned picture I knew this would be the one.

I again used a photo editor called “PicsArt” and started with a blank project. I uploaded the picture and clicked the option of “Add Text.” Then a white box popped up that allowed me to add the text I wanted. (I had to do this twice, once for the word up top and then for the words down bottom). I dragged and dropped the words to where I wanted them and that was it. Her face and the caption work perfectly.

Slide Guy Meets Carly Rae Jepsen

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

A few months ago a students started playing “Call Me Maybe” in the library.  He played it over and over and over again.  I thought I was going to kill myself, and I told him as much.  His response, “It really grows on you.”  And so it does.  I went home that night and instead of putting my head in the oven, I pulled up the video on Youtube and listened.  Over and over and over again.

It looks like Slide Guy likes Carly Rae Jepsen just as much as the rest of the world teenage America.

Slide Guy and Carly Rae

There’s nothing better for sliding than a soapy windshield!

I started working on this assignment in Photoshop, but I find it too overwhelming at the moment. I saw GIMP mentioned a few times, so I decided to download and use that.  I downloaded “Slide Guy” from the visual assignments page.  I downloaded the “Call Me Maybe” video from Youtube.  I then imported the video into VLC and found the scene I wanted.  I went through the scene frame by frame until I reached the one you see above.  To capture the still image, I used the “snapshot” option under “video.”  Once I had the two images, I opened them both as layers in GIMP.  It took me some time to familiarize myself with GIMP, but it was definitely manageable.  I still hope to master Photoshop…  or at least become competent in Photoshop… before the summer is over.
