Wrapping Up Daily Creates for Camp

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

I have enjoyed The Daily Creates of ds106 and will strive for continued participation in this creative outlet even after my educational enrollment in the ds106 curriculum comes to an end. Here are the 3 daily create assignments I completed for the last week of ds106 and Camp MacGuffin…

tdc198 – Draw a flower with your eyes closed.

Flower drawn on the inside of my eyelids

I’m not that great at drawing on a good day.Ask me to do it with my eyes closed ensures a disaster in the art department. Knowing this would be the case, I want to add a twist…to make it more interesting. So I used Flamepainter to blindly draw this flower. This made it look more abstract and colorful, standing out from the other pen and pencil renditions of this challenge!

tdc200 – Take a photograph of animal you think represents your personality.

I emerged from my cocoon…a Butterfly

“Just when the caterpillar thought its life was over, it became a butterfly.”
A butterfly is an accurate reflection of my life to this point, especially the last few years. I recently had this beautiful reminder tattooed on my ankle for my 35th birthday…to always remind me that change is ineviditable, so make it beautiful! I will blog separately about this in the near future, to give the the whole story, my story and why this holds such a powerful significance to me that I would tattoo on my body. Look for it, if you really want know what’s really Behind Blue Eyes.

tdc201 – Make a short audio of the sound of water pinging, flushing, splashing, roaring, tumbling…

Bathroom H2O by Chanda Sorrell Cowger

To create this sound clip, I recorded a few sounds of water in the bathroom. The shower running, toilet flushing, sick faucet flowing. Again, easy to do using the SoundCloud app on my iPhone to record a short bit.

Your Big Break

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

I created this assignment because I just got the idea for this assignment when I was sorting my CDs looking at how different all the album covers are and thought it would be a good idea for an assignment to create your own album cover, I felt like this would be a fun assignment to do because you could do anything you want with it its really up to you. So I hope you all enjoy creating your own.

Daily Creates — Week 9

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Another week gone like dust in the wind! Sorry to report that I fell off the daily create challenge this week, after completing 8 consecutive challenges, but here’s the 3 I did get published:

tdc190 - Flip the decibels. Make a loud sound soft, or a soft sound loud.

This wasn’t too difficult to do. I walked around my home, tuning up my listening skills to hear soft sounds that I probably over look. It’s been hot as Hades here in Fredericksburg this summer and my AC has been working overtime. I admit, I’m fearing the resulting electric bill! The AC softly blows the lovely cold air from the vents in a glorious, quiet murmur of sound. Almost a white noise, usually taken for granted. To get this sound bit, I simply turned on my SoundCloud app on my iPhone and stuck it into the vent to capture the sound…and nothing but the beautiful sound of cool air comforting me! No alterations necessary, worked like a charm.

tdc191 – Illustrate attraction in a photograph today.

Attraction

My first idea for this challenge was to photograph the stray dog hair that is usually attracted to my work clothes, but, of course, the one time I want to see it there, it wasn’t. So I took a stroll through my home again, and a walk down memory lane. A stuffed Simba and Nala from the Lion King are attracted by a magnet in their noses! The Lion King was my oldest son’s very 1st favorite movie and he carried the VHS tape with him EVERYWHERE! I found these guys among the other well-loved but forgotten childhood treasures.  (circa 1994?)

tdc192 – Make a video that represents the concept of flight (but not a bird).

I wanted to record a butterfly or dragonfly fluttering around, but the weather apparently wasn’t pretty enough or they are camera-shy and hiding. Whatever the reason, I couldn’t find any even though I looked for them for hours. Oh, well. Next best thing for flight…and airport! Fortunately for me, my office overlooks Dulles International Airport! Unfortunately, my timing was off and I was unable to capture the arrival or departure of aircraft. So I simply recorded a sample of my view of the airport and it’s activities from my vantage point. Not too exiting, I’d say, but it was original!

Next week is the last for daily creates for ds106, although I plan on continuing to participate, as time allows. It’s a good excuse to keep “making art, damn it!” if even on a smaller scale! :)

Rolling the remix dice I get: haiku it up [remixed]: Media Bender — Remix Machine

Original assignment: haiku it up For the writing assignment, take a random Dailyshoot photograph and create a haiku using that image Remix Card: “Media Bender”: Change up the media for the original assignment- take a video assignment into audio or design.

So I grabbed some images from here: Take a picture of a cloud and tell us what it looks like to you using A flickr CC search toy to get the ones with suitable licenses. I skipped the cloud pictures that had annotations or drawing and and was left with six strong pictures. I wrote a haiku to go with them, dragged the images into iMovie and added a voice recording and a by Kevin MacLeod.
Nothing that any primary 5 or 6 could not do. I am not terribly please with the audio, using a usb headset mic, recorded so many times my voice loses all meaning. Better mics not avaliable and I wanted to get these 2 stars down quickly and get back on the ds106 horse.

Back after AWOL

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

I’ve completely ducked out of DS106 for the last two weeks. Work, family and a week long conference meant I’ve not don anything for week 7, 8 or Week Nine: Remixing it Up — Camp Magic MacGuffin and didn’t do anything for the wonderful: Seven Day Daily Create Challenge.

I did see a tweet from Mike Berta inviting me to Radio campfire with stories and songs which I could not follow up. For the sounds of it: Digital Raconteur: Radio Campfire Show it was great. As I’ve been digging into Internet Radio at Radio Edutalk I would have loved to join in.

So I am going to try a few daily creates this week, I started yesterday:
Night fades into day
Two photos taken out my window with iPhone, layered and with a fade applied with photoshop touch on an ipad.

and I’ve made a quick one on the Remix Machine Tell A Tale On A Tapestry [remixed]: DS106-ersizing, whicxh turns out to be quite easy:

The Bildwirkerey von Bayeux looks useful: Create your own stories with the historic tale construction kit.

Hopefully heading for a slightly more creative week.

Re-MIXING

Here is my blog letter home for my Ds106 class, and basically all it is, is a summary of the things that I did this week.

Rage Faces

The Grinch Lives To Sled!

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Th original assignment was to pick your favorite quote or make up your own phrase which describes a philosophy that you try to live by and to design a minimalism poster to reflect this. The remix part of the assignment was to add in an element of Dr. Seuss. So since I had to use another students work I decided to browse through the submissions for the original assignment. At each assignment I came across I tried to see how I could incorporate Dr. Seuss into it. I finally came across the one below and and thought I remembered seeing a Dr. Seuss character ski before.

When I browsed through Google to find a Dr. Seuss character on skis the only thing that came up was the Grinch sledding. I felt like this could still fit into the mountain scene and the quote that says “Ride to live. Live to ride.” So you could interpret this picture as the Grinch riding down the hill because it is the easiest way to get to civilization (riding to live) and the dog enjoying himself like all pets do (living to ride).

Black Passion

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

For this assignment we had to mix together different movie posters to create one movie. I mixed up a picture of Natalie Portman from “Black Swan” and Johnny Depp from “Edward Scissorhands” to create my own movie poster entitled “Black Passion.”

I had no idea where to start for this assignment. So I just started browsing on the internet under images for movie posters. I came across “Black Swan” and thought…hmmm I could work with this. I wanted to try and do something dark, since she looks kind of wicked in this picture. I then thought of Edward Scissorhands, since he is kind of a dark, well looks wise at least, character. I liked how if I were to put the pictures next to each other it looked as if he was staring at her.

I went under paint and used the free form shape to trace around the Black Swan picture and then I cropped and saved it. I then opened up a new paint document and cropped Edward Scissorhand’s picture. I then added Edward’s picture to the Black Swan picture. I adjusted the sizes so they would be close to matching and made the background black. I looked up different quotes from both movies and the quotes listed on my picture are from Edward Scissorhands. In the real movie it is actually the female character who says “Hold me” and Edward who says “I can’t.” I decided to switch them because in this picture it looks like Edward is yearning for the Black Swan and she looks cold and distant.

For the title I tried to mix and match the titles of both the movies but it did not really work out, so I came up with “Black Passion” because they are both “dark characters” and one could assume from the picture that there is a love interest.
