Karma, Choose a word

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Karma, is the one word I always have lived by and plan to live by for the rest of my life. (So deep I know) I truly believe in its meaning, what goes around comes around, if you treat someone in a certain expect the something in a similar way returned. I have lived my life around the concept of Karma and so far I’ve been doing alright and I am happy with were I am in my life.

I put the word “karma” in a circle because its a continuos cycle that lasts forever.

The way I developed this was through a word document. I used cursive because of how well each letter flows together forming a more fluid circle shape. I chose the color blue, well honestly because its my favorite color. :)

CREW ROWING what i do © by katherinekd101

CREW ROWING what i do

“What People Think I do” has been one of the most popular memes that have circulated around the internet this year so far. How could I resist NOT doing an assignment like this?! I based this around rowing. I fell in love with crew during the Spring 2012 semester and now constantly crave it… only 2 more months :) . However, while doing crew I encountered a lot of “what my friends think” “What my parents think” “What strangers think” and then the cruel reality. 90% of the time I am rowing, but when I have time off I curl into a small ball and sleep for hours… even for days (that was a one time deal).

Once again my trusty friend PowerPoint helped me design this. I used Photoshop to reduce the size of the images so I could upload the photo into FLICKR. From all of the various options PowerPoint offers now, I chose a nice solid black background, it seemed suitable. From there I pasted each image in the order I wanted (design moment!) Under each image is a text saying “What X thinks I do” I used text box for this part. I decided to take a screen snapshot of my finished product. I found this to be a very tool as well. For anyone who has a MAC BOOK PRO and doesn’t know how to do this, simply download an application called “grab” it comes with the computer. This allows you to easily take snap shots :) .

Don’t hide the knowledge, Creative Commons

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

For our Design Assignments, one of the options we could choose was to make a Creative Commons poster. I love the idea of Creative Commons and figured this was a perfect assignment to do.

I made this image through PowerPoint, which to my surprise over the past two weeks has been an extremely resourceful tool. This really is a learning experience! I found an image that was under a Creative Commons Right and allowed me to alter the photo in a specific way. I used “text box” to insert the text and the Creative Commons logo.

This image was chosen specifically because I want to send the message that creativity should never been wasted away or hidden because of restrictions on copyright. Creative Commons allows for the removal of those restrictions and gives people the freedom to express themselves while sharing their art globally. Children hiding behind a huge umbrella symbolizes what potentially could happen to future generations of the internet doesn’t expand itself creatively and knowledgeably by peoples insights.

Danger! Danger! Will Robinson!

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Take a famous character’s catchphrase and illustrate it into an image.

I loved this assignment and had too many ideas, so I decided to make a tutorial. My sister and I love Lost in Space. We were introduced to the show when we didn’t understand why our mother went around saying, “Danger, Danger Will Robinson!” She promptly sat us down with the entire show on DVD.

Step One: Use photoshop and open the two pictures you will use.

Step Two: Use the Lasso Tool and carefully trace around Will Robinson’s face.

Step Three: Copy what you just traced and paste onto the other picture.

Step Four: Use Free Transform to resize the face.

Step Five: Group the Layers together. Then Duplicate the image.

Step Six: Select the duplication. Copy Merged and Paste into first group.

Step Seven: Move the layers so that one of them is partially hidden beneath the other.

Save your image and your finished! You successfully created an image for a catchphrase form Lost in Space.

Guess that Catchphrase!

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

This image was created in two parts. First, in Word, I created the body out of shapes and text. Second, in photoshop, I layered what I had done in Word on top of a rainbow background. Then erased the white background from around the body.

Brainstorming is always the hardest part of anassignment. This was no different. I love many characters that have many wonderful catchphrases. Which one do I choose? In the end, this catchphrase won out. You have to guess, so I can’t give too much away. Yet, my love for this catchphrase and the character behind it all started with my mother. She loves to educate me on older shows that my generation do not know. It often starts with her saying a phrase that I don’t understand. She will explain where it came from and sometimes I actually get to see for myself. The show that this catchphrase comes from captured my attention immediately and I couldn’t get enough. This is Jolie, signing off from Camp Magic MacGuffin!

Venn in the DC Universe?

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

After struggling, for hours, to create a venn diagram in Word, Excel, and GIMP. I went and found http://www.gliffy.com/, an online diagram making software. It was simple and easy to use. You drag out the shapes, shift them into position and then add the text.

At first, I had no idea what to put into a Venn Diagram. I looked at others to find my inspiration but nothing was coming. Then I started thinking, what do I want to put in the middle? Who deserves to be in the middle? Who beats out everyone else? Batman! Duh. It took me a while to come up with attributes that would put him in the middle, while having other heroes in the diagram as well.

I subscribe to the DC Universe. DC has all of the big boys and girls, including my favorite hero of all, Batman. A human who fights psychotic villains, bosses around heroes with superpowers, and manages to run a successful business. You can’t do much better than that!

Design Review

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

waitwhosthatguy

This is such a great design! It is based on famous sitcoms with a twist. The design is in balance created by the squares. No matter which way you look at it, 3×3 all the way around. The design is centered around the title of the show, which is where most of your attention is focused. Yet, the design is symmetrical and in proportion. The pattern of girl on one side and boys on the other with the parents creating the connection supplies the rhythm of the design as well as the unity. The bold blue creates a solid background for the characters to stand out against. Normally, people scan over the faces and recall names, yet here you find surprise. Gilligan has replaced a Brady. This replacement creates a connection between the two sitcoms. The alteration blends so well with the design that someone actually has to look to find what is different.

Share the Joy

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Part two of my Design Assignments requirement, I chose to do the Creative Commons Poster.

Being an animal enthusiast, I chose an adorable hound in the middle of a field of daisies. I chose the caption “Share the joy” for my photo because without the ability to share photographs and information, we wouldn’t be able to see the joy in photographs like this.

CC Poster

I love the idea of sharing the world, experiences, and joy and I think that this photograph that I chose tells a greater story than just an adorable hound in a field. It says something about the place the dog lives, the freedom it experiences regularly playing in a field. The absence of a leash, the rolling hills in the background, it all adds to the sense of freedom.

The Era of Creative Commons

Creative Commons, what is this?

Instead of limiting myself to one website, I looked at a few to learn and understand what exactly Creative Commons was and what was the point of even learning about it.

My first instinct was to go to YouTube and watch a tutorial on Creative Commons.

 “A Shared Culture”

This almost 4 minute clip discussed how there is another form of copyright that allows for people to share their work while still having certain limitations on how much of their work can be used. The people of Creative Commons believe the world thrives off of shared culture and how can one share culture if there is always an “all rights reserved” labeled on to it. The creators of images, music, art, and so on allow others to use their art to their level of comfort. Creative Commons allows people to “exercise [their] copyright in more ways.”

The next link I explored was of course to the most obvious one, the website itself based on Creative Commons.

www.creativecommons.org

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that allows people to share their art and creativity through using free and legal tools. This organization provides a free copyright license, which allows ANYONE to provide their art to the public under certain conditions of THEIR choice. They have a saying that is “All Rights Reserved” is now “Some Rights Reserved.” This website included some of the “BIG” names on the Internet that use Creative Commons.

  • Al Jazeera
  • Flickr
  • Google
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Public Library of Science
  • Wikipedia
  • Whitehouse.gov

The vision that creative commons has in their mindset is to reach the full potential of the Internet. In other words have people be able to fully participate in a global movement of sharing creativity across the planet.

This is where all searches start and is the basis for any information (reliable or not) Wikipedia!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons

According to Wikipedia, Creative Commons is from Mountain View, California. This website allows creators, artists, amateurs, and people in general to practice their rights to reserve their work in any way they want. They provide an alternative method to the traditional copyright of “All Rights Reserved.” This movement is described as the “copy left movement” which is building an abundant public domain for creativity and knowledge.

The next two websites I explored was their Twitter and Facebook accounts. The information on these social media platforms may not be as rich as other websites but it generally cuts straight to the point with out the “fluff.”

https://twitter.com/#!/creativecommons

I suggest all DS106 members follow these guys on Twitter!

The Bio section or About Me section discusses that they are a nonprofit that is dedicated to let people share and develop on other peoples works while using a certain type of copy right.

https://www.facebook.com/creativecommons

Like all of the other websites, Facebook discusses what Creative Commons is and what their mission is as a corporation. One of their goals is to increase creativity through cultural, educational, and scientific content. Creative commons does not necessarily replace copyright but it applied on top of it so you can modify it to your interests. Creative Commons is open not just to artists but also to students, educators, and scientists, anyone who puts information on the Internet. They offer a vast amount of Creative Commons licenses depending on what sparks your interests.

What Did I get out of all this research on Creative Commons?

This is a great way to share your creativity and knowledge while allowing other people to enjoy it while having some restrictions. The Internet is a place to share and learn, this allows for that to continue and grow. There are different types of license available to use and how restricted you want to be is totally your choice! In my opinion this is phenomenal in the copyright industry, you can adjust privacy in your own manner, something never done before.

Tragedy of the Commons

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

The title may not be the most appropriate, because it doesn’t seem to be a tragedy at all that the work is shared. I did just learn this term in regards to environmental degradation so now when I hear the word commons I immediately turn to this phrase.

Creative Commons is a non-profit out of California that has created a forum and way of sharing creative work that others can build upon… legally.

Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical
infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and
innovation.

So, the CC has six different types of licenses you can use, free of charge, on your creative works. They have all combinations of permissions to…

  • editing
  • commercial/non-commercial use
  • accreditation
  • license continuance

You can search the Creative Commons database and see results immediately of CC licensed photographs that you can use.

CC receives donations and support from from Google, Mozilla, Red Hat, Best Buy, Duke, eBay, Microsoft, Nike, and more. Wikipedia uses the CC license for information on their site, and Al Jazeera has used the CC license on some broadcasts.

For licensing and honor code purposes, I used the Creative Commons website directly and Wikipedia.
